People get so hung up on titles in the workplace and think that in order to be a leader, you have to have a title that with the word manager, director, or some other executive function in it.
The reality is that you can be a leader without technically having direct reports or a job role that puts a Director title on your business card. The reverse is also true. You can be a manager of people, and not be a leader, or be a bad one.
Leadership is taking initiative, being bold, and looking out for the greater good of the organization and the people in it.
You can be a leader within your organization.
You can be a leader within your industry.
You can be a leader within your family.
What does this look like in practice? Take opportunities to be part of higher-level conversations. Speak up and offer ideas, solutions and input. Don’t wait to be called on.
Help to elevate others within your organization. Coach and mentor others through your daily conversations. The best leaders help others succeed.
Volunteer to take on projects that would be added to your workload, but that is in alignment with what you’re good at and what you like to do. These are things that come easy to you, and are fun for you, while also adding a lot of value for others.
Here is a key element…invest in personal growth. In your corporate career, talk to your boss about this. What opportunities are there that the company would support you taking advantage of? Your growth is a benefit to them, too. Do the work, and come up with some suggestions, but don’t be afraid to ask. The worst thing that could happen is that they say ‘no’ to paying for wherever you proposed. The fact that you asked and are interested in growth opportunities speaks volumes.
If you have your own business, invest in growth opportunities…. you will get way more than just your investment back. You have to keep learning and you have to keep growing; otherwise, you will become stagnant, burned out, and lose your excitement.
Decide that you are going to be a leader, and then seek out opportunities to show leadership. Don’t wait until someone else gives you a title that indicates that you are in a leadership role by default. Remember, YOU get to make decisions that will build your life. You are in the driver’s seat. It will be noticed; in your company, in your industry, and really it carries over into all areas of your life. From there, opportunities will open, and you will find yourself stepping into things that are new and exciting.
You are a leader. Whatever your title is.
Decide that you are.
Let your actions show that you are.
And continue to develop those skills and mindset!
